In a sweeping move to strengthen national security, law enforcement authorities across Bangladesh have arrested 1,140 individuals in just one day under the ongoing "Operation Devil Hunt."

This significant development was reported by the Police Headquarters on Sunday evening, February 16.

The police shared that 389 of these arrests were directly related to the operation, while the remaining 751 arrests were made in connection with other cases and warrants.

Authorities also seized a locally made pipe gun and a machete during the course of the operation.

The crackdown comes after a violent incident on February 7 in Gazipur, where students were attacked, sparking protests and demonstrations by the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement and the National Citizens Committee the next day.

In response to the escalating situation, the interim government decided to implement stricter security measures across the country, which led to the launch of "Operation Devil Hunt" on February 8.

On Friday, February 14, another round of arrests was carried out, with 477 individuals detained as part of the ongoing operation. Additionally, 870 people were arrested in relation to various other cases.

The government has emphasized that this operation will continue as long as necessary to maintain law and order across the country.
